About Me - Stephanie Sharp
Personal Information… Born October 2, 1975 in Chillicothe, Missouri, the daughter of Beverly and the late Stephen Sharp. Relocated to Garden City, Kansas, May 1977. Stephanie and her husband, Dan Bruyn, live in Lenexa, KS with their daughter, Anna, who was born in October 2008.
Public School … Jennie Wilson Elementary, Kenneth Henderson Junior High, and graduated Garden City High School with a 4.0 grade point average in 1994.
Fall 1994 … Attended Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas. Presidential Academic Scholar, Music and Leadership scholarships. Graduated Magna cum Laude in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in French, a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in International Politics, and a minor in Business Leadership.
Honors and Activities … Department of Defense National Security Education Program Scholar to Ifrane, Morocco; Rotary International Ambassador Finalist; Association of Leadership Educators Student Scholar of the Year; Member, Pi Gamma Mu International Social Science Honor Society; Kansas Student Leadership Forum; The Washington Center Women as Leaders Academic Forum; Founder, Southwestern College Republicans; Kansas Intercollegiate Band; Commencement Speaker and Class President, Class of 1998.
Fall 1998 … Began courses at George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs, majoring in International Security Policy. Selected to participate in Women's Foreign Policy Group Mentor Program; Co-Chair, Elliott School Graduate Student Forum; Graduated with Master of Arts in International Affairs, May 2000.
Career background … Worked full-time in the U.S. Senate during graduate school. Legislative Aide for foreign affairs, defense, international trade, and agriculture issues. Relocated to Kansas City in 2000 and became the Kansas Government Relations Director for the American Cancer Society. Stephanie ran for the Kansas Legislature in 2002 and was re-elected in 2004 and 2006 all by large margins. Her legislative e-newsletter, the Sharp Record was a Capitol favorite and caused more than a dozen fellow legislators to hire her to compose their newsletters. She retired from the legislature in January 2008 to pursue a full-time job and start a family. Stephanie was elected to a four-year term on the Board of Trustees for Johnson County Community College in April 2009. She is currently the Director of Community Relations for the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.
