Friends:

A little something for everyone - K-State fans, theater fans, politics, and even some off-session education policy.

One quick political update:  Monday, June 12th, 12:00 noon was the deadline to file for office.  I will face a Libertarian and a Democrat in the November 7th election.  However, that does not get you off-the-hook to vote on August 1st!  I am treating this just like any other election summer - yard signs and door-to-door included.  There are a number of hotly contested statewide primary elections as well as precinct races that are very important.  In fact, my husband, Dan Bruyn and I are both running for precinct committeeman and committeewoman.

What do Precinct Committeepersons do?  Every precinct is represented by one woman and one man for the Republican and Democratic parties.  In the case of a vacancy, these people "elect" the replacement.  A Republican vacancy is elected by the Republican committee and a Democrat vacancy is elected by the Democrat committee.  For instance, Rep. Dean Newton recently retired from the legislature to take a new position.  A vote was held among the precinct committee members in his district to elect someone to fulfill the remainder of his term.  Rep. Kay Wolf is now running for a complete term.  Another example was when Sheriff John Foster died.  The Republican precinct committee members for the entire county elected his successor.  It doesn't happen often, but these positions are crucial when a vacancy occurs.

Announcements

1.  Are you a K-State alum, parent, or friend?  Ever had a chance to hang out with famed

Former KSU Head Coach Bill Snyder?

I am cosponsoring a breakfast fundraiser for TLC for Kids, which is doubling as a "Thank You" for Coach Snyder.  This will be a great event to meet Coach 1-on-1, take a chance on some great raffle and live auction items (signed artwork/footballs/basketballs, football trips/tickets, and one-of-a-kind paraphernalia and sporting opportunities), plus help a wonderful cause!  Besides, it's a breakfast event, so you don't have one more thing in the evening.

Who:  Coach Bill Snyder, appearances by Kansas City Chiefs and KSU players

What:  Fundraiser for TLC for Kids (www.kidstlc.org)

When:  Wednesday, June 21st, 7:30 am

Where:  810 Zone, 4800 W. 119th Street, Leawood, KS 66209 (One of the restaurants in the Town Center parking lot.)

DONATION:  $25 gets you breakfast and one raffle ticket

2.  Although it didn't make it into the programs L, I am sponsoring The Theatre in the

Park at Shawnee Mission Park (http://www.theatreinthepark.org/index.cfm).  TTIP is truly a gem for our communities, and I encourage you to pack a picnic and some OFF and enjoy an upcoming show:  CATS (July 22-25), Peter Pan (June 30-July 4; July 6-9), Grease (July 14-16, 20-23), Bye Bye Birdie (July 28-30; Aug 3-6).

Education and Personal Activities

I hope to have an update next week on the status of the Montoy v. Kansas case that is in front of the Supreme Court.  You'll remember that this is the case where mid-size school districts sued the state for not providing enough money for education, per the state constitution.  The court told us to deposit more money last year and maintained jurisdiction over the suit in case we decided not to follow the law (state constitution) and their recommendations.

Oral arguments begin on Thursday to determine if the funding bill we passed this year complies with the court's expectations and the constitutional mandate.  I'll keep you posted!
