November 2010

Friends:

I owe you a real newsletter – and one is coming – but for now, PLEASE vote! A few friends are running in big races tomorrow (Kevin Yoder, Jerry Moran), but I have been so politically disconnected lately that I have not followed races like I should have – more on my diversions below…

Meanwhile, back at the ranch…

Two weeks before the primary election, the event planner that works for me announced she was moving to Washington state to go to law school. She was planning the KU Medical Center annual alumni & community relations gala that was on October 9. So, between July 15 and October 9, I did not attend one campaign forum, meet-the-candidates, read an article, put up a yard sign, walk a door. And then there’s the get-nothing-else-done-at-work hangover from helping to host 600 MDs, PhDs and RNs for dinner!

I wasn’t in the thick of the political season and with all the nasty commercials from nameless, faceless political committees, it felt pretty nice. Take a second to Google the names of those committees at the end of commercials and the bottom of mailers and see how short the road is. These groups don’t have to report who funds them, for how much, where/how/who they spend it to defeat or elect or how much they spend. You can quite literally buy Kansas races for very little money (compared to other states).

Job Opening!

As I mentioned above, the event planner in our office left in July and due to a 90-day hold on hiring for state jobs, the position finally has been posted. If you know an event planner who is detailed oriented, encourage them to check out the posting at www.kumc.edu, position number M0202487.

In closing – VOTE!!

You vote, whether or not you go to the polls. Not voting is just as much a vote as casting that ballot. It’s giving someone else your voice. Who will speak for you if you don’t?

I’ll keep this one short – and do a recap after the election when I’ve had time to analyze the candidates and races, who wins with the winners and who loses. Click on the JoCo election office below to find your polling place and your exact ballot – be prepared! Google the candidates, see what you find!
