The Sharp Record
ssharp@ink.org

OK, so there’s not a lot of action for a true “Play-By-Play”, so I am making my own news…  Radio show, email-raiser (upping the ante), Overland Park Eggs and Issues, and some uneventful days in Topeka because the Senate is a better roadblock than a motorcade.

1.  “Inside Kansas Politics” with Representatives Stephanie Sharp and Rob Boyer

Yes, that’s right – I’m going on the radio!  Every Saturday morning at 10:00 am on Hot Talk 1510 AM KCTE you can find Rob Boyer and me leading a frank discussion of the issues facing Kansans today.  The show will spotlight legislators from across the state, in addition to state and national leaders.  We encourage your calls:  913-491-TALK (8255).  We are very excited about starting this show and opening up the legislative process for a behind the scenes view from those of us in the trenches!

Advertising opportunities!  If your business is interested in marketing to an educated, primarily Johnson County listenership, you can sponsor one of our shows!  Call me at 913-579-4376 for more details.

2.  Email-raiser submissions (plus a bonus prize) are due by Close of Business today (5:00 pm-your COB, not mine!).  Note: telling me about available lists doesn’t count.  Your email addresses should be in spreadsheet format.  The race is on – t-shirts and collectible legislative coffee mugs are at stake.  For the First Place winner, I’m sweetening the deal.  I’ll throw in a book by Thomas Kincaid called “The Spirit of America”.  It is about a boy who comes to the States from Belgium, using Kincaid’s patriotic paintings to illustrate the story.

3.  Overland Park Chamber of Commerce “Eggs and Issues”

It’s my turn to be on the discussion panel for the chamber breakfast.  The breakfast is Saturday morning, April 3rd, 7:30 am at the Ritz-Charles banquet center, 9000 W. 137th Street in OP.  I’ll head straight from there to the radio station for our inaugural show!

Floor Action
We will be considering the budget (we hope) about 3:30 pm today.  Rumor has it that we will not be pulling the marathon sessions today and tomorrow that we were expecting.  I just visited the Senate Education Committee, which passed out HB 2940 with a couple of amendments:  1)  Strip the underlying bill language (micro-managing school districts and the exact courses they must teach), and 2) requiring districts that increase their LOB under the bill to take the tax increase to a vote.

Take this with a grain of salt, I was trying to listen in to an overcrowded committee hearing without microphones, and when I had to leave, they had not finalized the bill.  Bottom line?  It’s still up in the air.  The Senate still has to pass something for there to be a conference committee on education at all.  CALL YOUR SENATOR TODAY!  The Johnson County Hotline to the Capitol is:  913-715-5000.

Beyond that, a lot of motions to concur or non-concur with conference committee changes to bills.  Nothing of too much interest.

That’s all for now – good luck on the contest!  Winners will be announced in tomorrow’s edition of the Sharp Record.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of further service to you.
