The Sharp Record
ssharp@ink.org

Friends:

Welcome to the Sharp Record – your reliable source for discussion of the top issues in Lenexa and Shawnee, updates on the Kansas legislature, and this time of year, election information!  Hope everyone got registered to vote – today was the final day!  I intended to remind you earlier, but a computer glitch caused me to start from scratch on today’s newsletter…  Ahh, the wonders of technology.

Debate started on TV today!

Debate - your opportunity to make an educated decision in this election…

The League of Women Voters and Johnson County Community College sponsor televised forums for candidates.  My debate went VERY well!  There are clear differences between my positions and those of my opponent.  You will also notice a very distinct difference between our understanding of the issues – specifically school finance!

Inside KS Politics

This week we hosted the Republican candidates for the 10th Senate District, Sen. Nick Jordan and Lisa Benlon.  We followed that up with a great interview with Valerie Jung, a campaign consultant in Johnson County.  It was a GREAT show, I hope you tuned in!

NEXT WEEK on IKP – we have a treat for you!  The candidates for the 3rd Congressional District will be joining us.  You will enjoy this format – the candidates will be on separately, not all at once, which will be much less contentious than other formats in which you have heard these candidates.  We have confirmed Patricia Lightner and Adam Taff, and are still waiting to hear from the Kris Kobach campaign.

TUNE IN SATURDAY MORNING, JULY 24th, 10:00 am, Hot Talk 1510 AM

Poll Watcher

Want to be the first to know my election results?  I need 15 poll watchers to get my results at the polling locations!  All you do is show up at the location about 6:45 pm on Election Day, show them your permission form (every poll watcher must carry one, signed by the candidate), they give you my results, and you call me and let me know!  It’s that easy.  Let me know if you are interested.

Lisa Benlon

Many of you have asked how to get in touch with my predecessor, Lisa Benlon.  Lisa can be reached at 913-268-4326, or via email at lbenlon@everestkc.net.

Rain to Recreation

The City of Lenexa will have an initiative on the ballot on August 3rd.  It will provide funding for the Rain to Recreation program proposed by the City.  For more information and to get a yard sign, check out www.raintorecreation.org.

CORRECTION:  I misspoke in last week’s Sharp Record – The court’s decision on disallowing Unaffiliated voters to vote in primaries only affects the Republican Primary.  Unaffiliated voters can vote in the Democrat primary.  I only know of one in Johnson County, but there are a handful of Democrat primaries in Wyandotte County.

Where’s Waldo (Rep. Sharp)?  July 9 – July 19th, 2004

  • Family Fun night at Ad Astra Park – thanks for showing your support!
  • “Grown-ups night” at Tanner’s – what a great turnout!
  • Doors, doors, and more doors…
    • Westchester
    • Greystone South
    • Indian Woods – THANKS Kim Galbreath!

Question of the Week!

Last week’s question:  What Kansas city is known for salt mining?

Answer and Winner:  Kurt Manske of Net Connectivity, a technology management company, is this week’s winner!  Hutchinson, Kansas is home to the salt mines.  In fact, famous artifacts like the original reel-to-reel of the Wizard of Oz are stored underneath the city.  Kurt wins a Seal of Kansas lapel pin and one of my refrigerator magnets.

New Question:  Pop-culture Kansas question…  On the last season of the NBC show “Friends”, Phoebe dated and married Mike.  What is Mike’s “real” name; where is he from, and name two other movies he has been in.

As always, I would love your comments and questions about anything included here, or about anything in state government!  If I can ever be of service to you, please do not hesitate to drop me a line!
