Greetings to the newcomers and newshounds, the curious and confounded, the Record-addicts and rebels alike to your “Election Week” Sharp Record (VOTE ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 3RD). You should have received a mailing from me today with your voting location on it – take the card to the polls with you!

The last minute attacks have begun, just as I warned (my opponent has not signed the Kansas Governmental Ethics “Fair Campaign Pledge”)… Read on for the Sharp Record’s version of “Ad Watch”. VOTE ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 3RD (Do you sense a trend?)

When you open your mail today, you might see a mailing about a gentleman named Marty Metz. Yes, that is my opponent. Previously, I have refused to use my time and energy to put my opponent’s name out there, but his card just talks about “his opponent”, because he knows his claims are farfetched, and he would get called on it if he said who his opponent was! So, when you receive it, you’ll know he’s talking about me.
Claim #1: Because I do not have seven (7) children (who all attend private school), I do not have “Real Life Experience”.
The facts are TRUE. I do not have seven children and apparently the life I have been experiencing is all a very dull independent film.
Claim #2: I voted against an education bill that would have increased local control and added $289 tax free per pupil.
The facts are FALSE. This is the bill I mentioned in my education position paper last week – the $82 million plan that stole money from the transportation plan. PLUS! Someone needs to understand how school funding works in Kansas… The bill would not have been tax-free – the local control portion is raised through property taxes. Schools opposed this bill, teachers opposed it, and most of all, parents opposed it. None of that is mentioned – So, representing YOU is now a negative? I don’t think so.
Claim #3: Supposedly, I don’t pay taxes. Somehow this is tied to me being a former lobbyist.
This statement is FALSE. Do lobbyists not pay taxes? Man, I missed the boat on that one (where’s my refund check!). This is my favorite - I was a “Washington lobbyist”. The lobbyist part is true anyway, but funny he doesn’t mention who I lobbied for… I was the Kansas lobbyist for the American Cancer Society. Cancer patients, survivors, their caregivers, families, and friends. Sounds like a pretty dubious bunch, huh? My paternal grandparents, my father, and an aunt have all died of cancer, and my maternal grandparents and two mentors are survivors. I am proud of the fact that to this day, I wake up thinking “what can I do today to get us one step closer to curing this scourge”. I refuse to apologize for that.
Claim #4: I vote with the Democrats.
The facts are FALSE. Ninety-nine percent of our bills have a vote of 120 to something (there are 125 in the House), so yes, EVERY Republican will have a large percentage of votes with Democrats. Plus, he states 85% voting with the Democrats, when the number is actually 83%. So much for working together and bipartisanship? What the Kansas City Star-referenced article conveniently omitted was that I voted with Republicans 88% of the time!
ü Just to warn you – my opponent in 2002 issued an automated phone call to the district the Monday before the election, claiming similar points about me, so I expect something underhanded on Monday, you should too.

This week on Inside Kansas Politics – Secretary of State, Ron Thornburgh and Johnson County Election Commissioner Connie Schmidt will discuss the upcoming election on Tuesday, the vote by the Kansas Republican Committee to open future primaries to Unaffiliated voters, campaign finance reports, and other election stuff!
Last week’s 3rd Congressional District Forum – WAS GREAT! It was so nice to have an “Attack-Free Zone” in that race. All three candidates did well and refrained from attacking the others. Make sure to get out and VOTE ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 3RD, vote for the person you trust!

Answer and Winner: Katy Crow of Lenexa is this week’s winner. Dr. Phil McGraw, of the popular straight-talk show “Dr. Phil”. He was a football player at Shawnee Mission North.
