Greetings on a beautiful day in Kansas!  I have been trying not to clutter your Inbox if there isn’t something to share, but it seems that so much happens between weeks, that there is so much to tell!  Socials, debates, news, doors, fun stuff!  Respond to this email if you would like a yard sign.

One warning though – it is that time of year when challengers in campaigns get “creative” with the facts.  You MAY receive mailings over the next couple weeks that are questionable.  In fact, in the last week before the election, many challengers can be downright slanderous in an effort to prevent the incumbent from responding with the truth.  I hope that we have built enough trust that you can come to me directly and ask about any mailings you receive instead of believing anything my opponent MAY put out.  This is already happening in other campaigns, so I just wanted to give you a heads up, just in case!

EVENTS!  You can pick up yard signs at either of these events…

July 11 (5:00-7:00 pm) - Family fun meet and greet, AD ASTRA POOL

If you want to put a “face with an e-newsletter” this is a great opportunity!

Bring your kids for this evening of family fun at the Ad Astra Pool shelter on 83rd and Maurer.  We will have drinks and cookies, and talk about the issues facing our children.  Don’t worry – no sermons – this is a casual, fun get-together.  Hope to see you there!

**  If you are able to bring two dozen homemade cookies, please email me back.

**  You can bring your frisbees, footballs, or other game activities!

**  Contributions will be accepted, but are not required.

July 13 (6:00-8:00 pm) – “Grown-ups gathering” at Tanner’s Bar and Grill on 87th: 12906 West 87th Parkway

This will be another fun way to meet-and-greet in a casual environment.  Join me at my favorite place for jalapeno cheese bites – Tanner’s on 87th.  Again, I will talk briefly about the campaign, but this is mainly an opportunity to get to know me off the beaten e-newsletter…

**  Contributions will be accepted, but are not required.

Debate on TV – Make an educated decision in this election…

The League of Women Voters and Johnson County Community College sponsor televised forums for candidates.  My debate went VERY well!  There are clear differences between my positions and those of my opponent.  You will also notice a very distinct difference between our understanding of the issues – specifically school finance!

Channels:  Everest 17 (they are having problems accessing Everest), Time Warner 17, and Comcast 22

Monday, July 19th, 2:00 pm

Friday, July 23rd, 8:00 pm

Sunday, July 25th, 7:00 pm

Thursday, July 29th, 9:00 pm

Sunday, August 1st, 2:00 pm

Open Primary Update

The lawsuits over the opening of the Democrat and Republican Primaries were decided yesterday, in favor of keeping them closed.  The Kansas City Star had a very informative article earlier this week, you will have to register with the Star to get it online.

Door-to-Door

Since I last wrote, I have made new friends in:  Hickory Woods, Brighton, and Briargrove.  I have been blessed with GREAT weather for walking – what a wonderfully mild summer (someone knock on wood for me…).

Lenexa Community Days

AWESOME!!!!  Thank you so much to:  Dave and Ingrid Peterson; Joe Spiess, Charlie and friends; Celeste Banks and her friends Morgan and Megan; and of course, my handsome boyfriend, (he was the show-off on his red Harley).  The crowd loved the “Harley noise” and the hand fans we gave out.  It was a great parade with a humbling response – many of you thanked us at the parade for sending you this newsletter.

Inside Kansas Politics

  • This week’s IKP will focus on some of our local races.  We are attempting to confirm all of the candidates in the race for the 29th district, which is part of Overland Park.
  • Last week on IKP, both Rob Boyer and I were in the Lenexa Community Days parade, so we had the station replay the show with guest Dennis Jones, Chairman of the Kansas Republican Party.

Question of the Week!

Last week’s question:  Jeopardy-style:  I was commemorated by a $.03 postage stamp in the late 1940s. I attended school, was a member of the Presbyterian Church and its choir, and later operated a laundry in Minneapolis, Ottawa County, Kansas.  Who am I?

Answer and Winner:  George Washington Carver is the answer.  I am disappointed in you!  Usually, I have 15 answers in the first ten minutes after a newsletter is sent…  Was this one a toughy?  The winner was Dodie Wellshear Johnson, Director of the Kansas Immunization Action Coalition.  Dodie wins a Seal of Kansas lapel pin and a Sharp for Kansas magnet.

New Question:  What Kansas city is known for salt mining?

As always, I would love your comments and questions about anything included here, or about anything in state government!  If I can ever be of service to you, please do not hesitate to drop me a line!
